TEAC CD-WE54E Review, Rating & Buyers Guide

If you are researching a new CD-RW Drive or CD Writer, we hope that our TEAC CD-WE54E review, rating & buyers guide will help you.TEAC is a well-known and highly revered name when it comes to audio. It’s no surprise, then, that the vendor would throw its hat in the CD-RW ring. The CD-WE54E drive we reviewed is a large external drive rated at 4X speed on burning CD-Rs and writing CD-RWs, and offering a modest 6X read speed on standard CD-ROMs. That relatively slow 6X CD-ROM read speed keeps the CD-WE54E from being suitable for use as the only optical drive for your system. Keep in mind that while several of the external CD-RW drives we’ve reviewed are very suitable for portable use with a laptop, the TEAC CD-WE54E is not really designed for this use. Measuring 7.5x2.5x9.5 inches and weighing at a stout 5.62 pounds, the CD-WE54E is rather large and weighs as much as some notebook computers we’ve tested. You can, of course, lug it around, and because it uses a USB interface, it can be used with laptops as well as desktop PCs, as long as the system you are using it with has both a USB port and operating system support for USB. TEAC supplies the CD-WE54E with software only for Windows 98.

Installing the CD-WE54E takes less than a minute. The drive is detected when you plug in the USB cable between the CD-WE54E and your PC. When the screen asking where the driver is located is displayed, insert the CD-ROM included with the TEAC drive into the CD-ROM drive on your PC. If you don’t have a CD-ROM drive on your PC or laptop, don’t despair. You can download the drivers from TEAC’s Web site, install the driver for the CD-WE54E drive, and finish the remainder of the software installation from the TEAC drive.

TEAC includes Easy CD Creator software for burning CD-Rs; DirectCD packet writing software for writing and rewriting CD-RWs; TakeTwo, an excellent backup utility; and Adaptec Jewel Case Creator for creating jewel case inserts. TEAC even includes blank CD-R and CD-RW discs (one each).

The TEAC CD-WE54E doesn’t offer blazing speed, but it does provide an easy-to-install and easy-to-use CD-RW drive at a very reasonable cost.

Pro: Good performance, very good looking, reasonable price.

Con: Unit is fairly large.
