If you are researching a new CD-RW Drive or CD Writer, we hope that
our LaCie USB CD-RW review, rating & buyers guide will
help you.
LaCie's CD-RW drive was only one of two external CD-RW drives we looked
at. External drives such as these are easy to move among several computers,
which means they're perfect as back-up devices. But they also have
several disadvantages: The two major ones are slower speed and greater
cost.
The LaCie USB CD-RW had one advantage over all of the other units
we looked at. You can use it with a PC, a Mac, or share it between
both because it ships with software for both types of computers.
On the PC side, there's Adaptec's Easy CD Creator and Direct CD.
Mac users get Toast for making CD-Rs and CD-RWs. This dual-system
capability makes the LaCie drive perfect for an office that has
both PC and Mac users. The USB interface makes switching computers
literally a snap, and the use of a standard computer-style power
cord means you can purchase a spare cord or two for a couple of
bucks, leave it plugged in near each machine you'll move the LaCie
drive to, and not need to worry about external power supplies. And
if you have a fairly new laptop with a USB port, it's easy to add
CD-RW capability to it by plugging in a LaCie drive.
If you want a really easy-to-attach-and-use CD-RW, can live with
so-so performance, and have a USB port and either Windows 98 or
Mac OS 8, the LaCie USB CD-RW drive is definitely worth a look.
Pro: Easy USB hookup, external drive can be shared with several
PCs, works with Macintosh, good software bundle
Con: Slow speed
