The Reviews

Ford Focus
A good range of engines and the lovely styling mean the Focus has overtaken the Golf as the car to lust after in it's segment. Great handling, smart looks and high levels of safety make it a winner. Available in Hatchback, Saloon and Estate the hatch is easily the most beautiful, especially in three-door form. The controls are light and smooth to operate the gearchange is exceptional and minor switches are well-laid out. The Focus is in keeping with the rest of the Ford range, as being a car that is as much fun on a twisty road as it is competent in the city.

Good Point
Great fun to drive, wonderful gearbox, holds its value well.

Bad Point
A shame about the estate which should really be like a Sportwagon instead.

Subaru Legacy
Crisper to drive, cleaner to run and sleeker to look at the completely new Legacy saloons, Sports Tourers and crossover Outbacks are now aimed unashamedly at leading prestige European marques.Exterior styling for the new Legacy and Outback now has a confident new poise and presence and the interior ambience matches the best the sporting executive sector has to offer. The symmetrical all-wheel drive driving dynamics are even more involving than ever, with the horizontally-opposed "boxer" engines and transmissions lowered and chassis and steering thoroughly revised for an outstanding ride and handling combination. This car can now stand toe-to-toe with the best European brands.

Good Point
Everything.

Bad Point
Subaru need to shout about it more.

Volkswagen Passat
This is the VW tilt at the upper-middle exec sector, so expect a lot. A good, solid design updated from the disappointing original variations makes this one of the front-running family saloons on euro roads today. Those superb VW engines range from 1.6-itre up to 2.0-litre. The diesels are some of the best in the business. The Passat is a roomy car - especially for the long-legged, although rear passengers might have to watch their heads, but there is an excellent finish to the cabin in both the saloon and estate.

Good Point
VW build quality and rock solid resale value.

Bad Point
Not nearly enough standard equipment on offer from VW

BMW 5-Series Sport Wagons
The new 5-series has arrived and the main talking point is the rather radical styling. Chris Bangle has completely redesigned the car and there is the danger that it will be a little too much for some owners. Photographs don't really do justice to the car however, as it looks really excellent in the flesh. The new car is lighter than the old one and has better handling thanks to the addition of the all-aluminium suspension and chassis from the 7-series, including the Dynamic Drive anti-roll system. Model range will start with 520i, 525i, 530i, 530d and 545i. The diesel, is the pick of the range for us. A 450bhp V10 M5 will follow.

Good Point
Lighter, faster and more innovative. A better car overall.

Bad Point
Will existing owners like the styling?
