The Reviews

Subaru Impreza
The changes are not just cosmetic. The WRX increases power from 218 to 225bhp. The throttle response has been improved due to revisions to the exhaust manifold aimed at smoothing the flow of exhaust gases. There are also changes to the nuttier STi model, just when the Alfa GTA was beginning to think it had its own way, with a change in the shape of the intercooler spray nozzle. There is improved front suspension thanks to trengthened mounts, improving handling.

Good Point
Looney tunes.

Bad Point
License eater.

BMW 3-Series
The 3-series is the next model in the mainstream BMW range that is due for a design rethink. Let's hope that they don't get too radical as the car has a very loyal following. The rearwheel drive car comes with a choice of several superb engines and is available in saloon, coupe, compact, touring and the ever-so-pretty convertible model. The range got a freshening up recently to keep interest in the car alive. The amazing M3 remains one of the finest performance cars around. These cars are superb all-rounders. Buy with confidence. Just try and avoid the rather wimpy 316i saloon.

Good Point
Its a BMW. Total competence again. In every guise the 3-series is a winner. Coupe is such a beautiful shape.

Bad Point
BMW's are gorgeous. A bad point is that more people can't afford to drive them!

Audi A4
Superb handling, guaranteed rock-solid resale value and the reassurance that you are driving one of the best-built cars on the market are all plus points. As ever with Audi - if you do decide on some options they are pretty hefty. Understatedly wonderful and a shrewd buy. New model offers more competition to the 3-series, although they could have been more adventurous with the styling. Avant model and recently released convertible have added more choice to the range. Cabriolet model is really pretty and solidly built and the addition of an entry level 1.8T means you can have one for under $40,000.

Good Point
Superbly built - the car oozes quality. The new styling isn't revolutionary but should keep Audi fans happy.

Bad Point
Will find it quite hard to lure BMW customers away from the 3-series due to the conservative styling.

Lexus IS 200
Lexus started at the top and have busily worked their way down, as it were, towards the 'compact executive' sector, finally entering the fray in early 1999 with the most elegant IS200. Refinement is the word, with state of the art design, build and engineering keynote features that can shade it against the best - namely the Mercs. BMWs, Audis and Alfa 156s that are the norm in the exec parking bays. There is one engine option (for now), a sweet-sounding and cogent two litre straight six that delivers 155bhp to the rear wheels. New 3.0 version adds even more power but is very expensive. Sportcross model will gain more popularity when the 2.0 model arrives later this year.

Good Point
Thinking persons crumpet, high on performance, safety and luxury

Bad Point
Not as much cabin space, not as many engines as the opposition
