The Reviews

LAND ROVER FreeLander
The hard or the soft option - the choice is yours. And if you can't make up your mind, go for the 'Station Wagon'. Either way, you get a thoroughly capable off-roader despite the fact that this Land Rover has the lowest ground clearance in the 'range'. On top of that you get a comfortable road-going machine that looks great thanks to a well-judged 'youth of today' frontage and no mean amount of design flare. There are two engines of which we recommend the 118bhp 1.8 litre plant, unless you really do intend getting your feet dirty, in which case the 2.0 turbodiesel is a must with its low rpm pulling power.

Good Point
Still very pretty and oh-so-chic.

Bad Point
Ground clearance could be a problem if you go a-wandering from state to state

Honda CR-V
Inexpensive SUV. Are you into a spacious cabin with a nicely car-like interior, a sweetly performing (0 to 60 in 10.1 seconds) 2.0-litre engine, a flat floor front to rear, high levels of safety and standard equipment, pertinent styling and dynamic road-going? Then have a look at the latest CR-V. Powered by an excellent 148bhp 2.0 VTEC engine the CR-V is not as radical as its HR-V sister but the new models styling is much improved.

Good Point
Good driving position, relaxed ambience, highly specified and quiet

Bad Point
Maybe the Honda CR-V is just a little too sensible. What do you think?

Volvo XC90
Meet the XC90, a full-blooded sports utility vehicle aimed firmly at the US market, but with plenty of European appeal. The XC90 has proven to be an outstanding success on both sides of the Atlantic. It has seven seats as standard which means it doubles as an MPV, it is nice to drive, very comfortable and wonderfully put together. The interior is particularly impressive. Buy the BMW X5 if you want something a little sportier, but for many commentators the XC90 is the more complete vehicle overall.

Good Point
Interior finish, seven seats, ride and noise refinement, pricing, safety.

Bad Point
Foot-operated parking brake a problem on manual version.

DAEWOO Musso
The Ssangyong Musso has returned after an extended leave-of-absence - and the only real surprise is that Daewoo, the new masters, didn't take the opportunity to change the awkward moniker. Like the Korando you get Mercedes power in the shape of the 118bhp 2.9 litre turbodiesel, so it is refined on the motorways and eminently capable off road. Roomy, comfortable and solid, both commercial and passenger formats boast a host of standards including traction control, dual baggies, ABS and A/C, amongst others. This makes the business version a real bargain: it weighs in at just under twenty grand seven thousand cheaper than the passenger option.

Good Point
Plenty of room. There is a good view of the road thanks to the seating position and the sloping bonnet.

Bad Point
Not very pretty a rethink needs to take place in the styling department..
